The concept of giving back one-tenth began with Abraham (Genesis 14), long before God gave the Law. The word “tithe” translates as “one-tenth.” In the “rule book” of Leviticus, Israelites are told All tithes from the land, whether the seed from the ground or the fruit from the tree, are the Lord’s; they are holy to the Lord. (Leviticus 27:30). In the book of wisdom, we’re encouraged to “Honor the Lord with your substance, and with the first fruits of all your produce.” Jesus tells his followers “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
